Emergency crews transported Bryant Gumbel from his Manhattan apartment on a stretcher

Bryant Gumbel, the veteran American broadcaster, recently faced a sudden health scare. TMZ reported that he was hospitalized in New York City following a medical emergency earlier this week.

First responders rushed the 77-year-old journalist from his Manhattan apartment to a nearby hospital late Monday night. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained under medical care, though authorities have not disclosed the cause of the emergency.

This incident has revived memories of Gumbel’s past health battles. In 2009, he revealed on Live! with Regis and Kelly that he had a malignant lung tumor removed, along with part of his lung and surrounding tissue.

Despite additional cancer cells being found, treatment was ultimately successful, and by 2010 Gumbel shared that he was cancer-free.

Throughout his decades-long career, Gumbel endured multiple surgeries, two battles with cancer, and a severe facial injury requiring more than 60 stitches, yet he rarely missed work during his 29-year run in broadcasting. His family has reassured the public that he is “okay”, though no further updates have been given.

Gumbel grew up in Chicago, the youngest of four children, and often credits his father, a Cook County judge, for shaping his drive. He gained fame as co-host of NBC’s Today and later led HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, which became one of the most awarded sports programs in television history.

In 2023, after 320 episodes, Gumbel retired from Real Sports, expressing peace with the decision. He now enjoys time with family and golf, while fans nationwide continue to send their well-wishes for his speedy recovery.
