Heartbreak as Politician Loses Four Family Members in Tragic Incident
NTSB Launches Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened an investigation into a tragic helicopter crash in Montana that claimed several lives, including members of Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s family.
A Heartbreaking Call
On the evening of October 22, Darren and his wife, Cindy Bailey, received devastating news. Their son Zachary, his wife Kelsey, and their two children—12-year-old Vada Rose and 7-year-old Samuel—were killed in the crash. Their 10-year-old grandson, Finn, survived because he was not aboard the helicopter.
Family Statement and Grief
In a public statement, the Bailey and Aaron Del Mar campaign expressed deep sorrow: “Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They find comfort in their faith, family, and the prayers of so many.” The family also requested privacy as they grieve and thanked supporters for their compassion.
A Family Dedicated to Farming
Zachary and his family were key members of the Baileys’ fourth-generation farm in Xenia, Illinois. The family had traveled to Montana for a farming convention, using one of their four-seater helicopters. Finn had ridden separately with a business partner due to space limits—a decision that spared his life.
Details of the Crash
Officials confirmed that the Robinson R66 helicopter crashed near Ekalaka, Montana, around 7:22 p.m. The cause is still under investigation. Zachary was piloting, with Kelsey beside him and their children in the back.
A Running Mate’s Tribute
Bailey’s running mate, Aaron Del Mar, expressed profound grief, saying, “I’m saddened beyond words… My heart aches for the Bailey family and for everyone whose lives they’ve touched. It’s truly heartbreaking.”
