New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani drops 4 fiery words for Trump
In a historic election, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has been chosen as New York City’s next mayor, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a sweeping victory.
With over 97% of votes counted, Mamdani earned more than 1.03 million votes — surpassing all his opponents combined — becoming both the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor. His rapid rise from relative obscurity to City Hall marks a major turning point in New York politics.
Celebrating his win outside the Brooklyn Paramount, Mamdani declared that New York would remain “a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and now led by an immigrant.” His victory speech emphasized inclusion and progress, striking a defiant tone toward President Donald Trump.
Addressing Trump directly, Mamdani said, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!” The statement reflected his campaign’s stance as a strong opponent of Trump’s policies, particularly on immigration and inequality.
Voter turnout reached its highest level in over 50 years, with more than two million ballots cast. Democrats across the state celebrated sweeping wins, while Trump warned that electing a “communist” mayor would risk federal funding for New York City.
Unfazed, Mamdani promised bold reforms — including rent freezes, free public transit, and expanded childcare — while pledging to defend the city’s residents against political threats.
With his progressive platform and grassroots energy, Mamdani’s victory signals a new era for New York — and a coming clash with Donald Trump over the city’s future.
