Trump urges Republicans to end Obamacare
As the federal government shutdown stretched into its 38th day, President Donald Trump renewed his push to dismantle Obamacare.
He called on Senate Republicans to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and instead direct federal health funds “straight to the people.”
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Hundreds of billions of dollars currently going to money-sucking insurance companies should be sent directly to the people so they can purchase their own, much better, healthcare.”
He added, “Take from the big, bad insurance companies — give it to the people,” reinforcing his stance against corporate control of healthcare funds.
The remarks came as Senate negotiations reached a standstill. Democrats refused to support a House measure to reopen the government without addressing the increasing cost of Obamacare subsidies.
Meanwhile, Republicans rejected Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s proposal to temporarily extend those subsidies in order to end the standoff.
Amid the deepening impasse, Trump demanded an end to the Senate filibuster, as the record-long shutdown began to severely disrupt air travel, food aid, and other essential federal services.
