At least 13 dead while others remain trapped after major blaze engulfs multiple Hong Kong buildings
A major fire has swept through multiple high-rise buildings in Hong Kong, killing at least 13 people, including a firefighter, and injuring 15 others, three of whom are in critical condition.
The blaze engulfed several towers at Wang Fuk Court, with footage showing flames consuming at least five buildings. The fire reportedly began around 2:51 p.m. local time on 26 November.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire, but it may have spread via bamboo scaffolding on the buildings. The complex is home to approximately 4,600 residents.
An extensive emergency response has been launched, with roughly 700 firefighters deployed to control the flames and assist residents.
Firefighter Ho Wai-ho, 37, was found collapsed at the scene and later died at Prince of Wales Hospital. Hong Kong’s fire director Andy Yeung praised Ho’s bravery and expressed deep condolences to his family.
Over 1,000 residents have been evacuated to shelters in the north of Hong Kong. Tai Po District Councillor Mui Siu-fung confirmed the large-scale evacuation effort.
Among those affected is Harry Cheung, a longtime resident of Wang Fuk Court, who described hearing a loud noise and quickly leaving to pack his belongings. The housing complex, occupied since 1983, falls under a government scheme for subsidised home ownership.
