Kennedy family members speak out on ‘surprise’ decision to rename famous Kennedy Center after Donald Trump
Members of the Kennedy family have publicly criticized plans to rename the Kennedy Center after Donald Trump, making it clear they do not support the decision.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. was established as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy following his assassination in 1963 and has long served as a symbol of his legacy.
On December 18, the center’s board reportedly voted unanimously to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center, citing Trump’s role in restoring the building and improving its financial position.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the decision on social media, praising Trump’s efforts and suggesting the renamed center would reach new heights of success and prestige.
Former Democratic congressman Joe Kennedy III strongly pushed back, questioning whether the move is even legal. He argued that the Kennedy Center is protected by federal law and cannot simply be renamed, comparing it to the Lincoln Memorial.
Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, also condemned the proposal, saying Trump’s administration has worked against free artistic expression. She stated that Trump’s values conflict with those championed by President Kennedy.
Maria Shriver also expressed shock at the announcement. Trump, however, said he felt honored by the decision, praising the board he appointed and claiming his leadership helped rescue the center from serious decline.
