Trump says US launched ‘powerful and de.adl.y’ strikes against ISI.S in Nigeria on Christmas Day
While much of the world observed Christmas Day in rest, the United States military remained active overseas. On December 25, a U.S.-led military operation was carried out in northwest Nigeria targeting militants linked to the Islamic State group.
The strike came amid growing global concern over violence in Nigeria, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities. According to reports, Nigeria’s population is religiously divided, with Christians and Muslims making up the majority.
Earlier this year, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz publicly highlighted the scale of violence, alleging that tens of thousands of Christians have been killed since 2009, along with widespread destruction of churches and schools.
Cruz stated that responsibility lies with specific individuals and groups, adding that the U.S. government is aware of those involved and intends to hold them accountable for their actions.
On Christmas Day, President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered what he described as a powerful and precise strike against ISIS-affiliated militants. He claimed the group had been responsible for brutal attacks, mainly against Christians.
Trump emphasized that the operation was meant as a warning against further violence and reaffirmed his administration’s stance against radical Islamist terrorism, praising the U.S. military’s capabilities.
Although the strike was described as deadly, casualty figures were not released. Nigerian military officials confirmed cooperation with U.S. forces, stressing that the operation was intelligence-led, carefully planned, and unrelated to religious targeting.
