Eric Dane’s harrowing words in final public appearance before his death
The entertainment industry is mourning the death of Eric Dane, who passed away on February 19 at age 53 after battling ALS.
Dane was widely recognized for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, a role that made him a fan favorite. In 2024, he publicly revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
In a statement to People Magazine, his family confirmed his passing. They shared that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia.
His family also highlighted his strength during his illness. Throughout his fight with ALS, Dane became a vocal advocate for awareness and research, determined to support others facing the same diagnosis.
In December 2025, he made his final public appearance during a Giving Tuesday panel hosted by I AM ALS and Synapticure. Speaking openly, he admitted the emotional toll of the disease but said he discovered resilience within himself.
At the time, he had just completed work on Brilliant Minds, portraying an ALS patient — a role that closely mirrored his own reality. Though difficult, he described the experience as cathartic and continued urging support for research.
Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. Remembered for both his talent and courage, his legacy extends beyond television to his advocacy and enduring strength.
