New Covid variant “Cicada” prompts vaccine concerns and symptom warnings
“Cicada,” formally called BA.3.2, is not simply a repeat of earlier COVID phases but a sign the virus continues to change.
First identified in South Africa in late 2024, it has since been detected across countries including the US, UK, Japan, and Kenya, often only after spreading.
With significant differences from earlier variants, it appears less familiar to the immune system, raising concerns about its ability to bypass existing defenses.
Even so, early reports from healthcare professionals suggest it is not more deadly than previous strains.
Its symptoms remain largely familiar, including cough, fever, fatigue, sore throat, congestion, shortness of breath, and loss of taste or smell.
Testing methods still work, and while vaccines may not prevent every infection, they continue to greatly reduce severe illness and death.
Experts emphasize vigilance over fear—encouraging basic precautions, staying home when sick, and keeping vaccinations current as both the virus and our response continue to evolve.
