Dad’s Constipation Turned Out to Be Bowel Cancer

Shawn Michael, a 48-year-old father, thought he was dealing with ordinary constipation. It was a problem millions of people experience every day, so at first, he tried over-the-counter treatment.

But the discomfort did not go away. He still felt like something was inside his abdomen, and soon the pain became severe. After one drink of fizzy soda, he said it felt like being hit hard in the stomach.

A CT scan later revealed a mass in his colon. Doctors told him the signs pointed to stage four bowel cancer, a diagnosis that left him thinking first about how he would tell his wife.

Michael had surgery to remove a large part of his colon. Doctors also found cancer-like tumors on fatty tissue inside his abdomen, which may have slowed the spread to other organs.

The cancer had already reached his liver, lungs, and spleen. He began chemotherapy to fight the disease, and in a later update, he shared that a scan showed no active tumors or evidence of disease.

His story is a powerful reminder not to ignore changes in bowel habits, especially when symptoms do not improve. Constipation is usually harmless, but ongoing pain, blockage, blood, unexplained weight loss, or lasting changes should always be checked by a doctor.
