What to Do First After a Snake Bite

A snake bite can be frightening, but staying calm and acting quickly can make a big difference.

The first step is to move away from the snake and call emergency services right away. Medical care is important because some bites may require antivenom. The CDC advises seeking emergency help as soon as possible after a venomous snake bite.

While waiting for help, keep the person still and calm. Have them sit or lie down with the bitten area in a comfortable position. Remove rings, watches, tight clothing, or anything that could become dangerous if swelling starts.

Clean the bite gently with soap and water, then cover it loosely with a clean, dry dressing. Do not cut the wound, try to suck out venom, apply ice, drink alcohol or caffeine, or use a tourniquet. These old methods can make the situation worse.

Do not try to catch or kill the snake. A photo from a safe distance may help doctors, but only if it does not delay care or put anyone at risk.

The key message is simple: stay calm, limit movement, remove tight items, call for help, and get medical care quickly.
