What to Do If You Find Bugs in Your Child’s Hair
Finding something crawling in your child’s hair can be upsetting, but it is usually a manageable problem.
The first step is to stay calm and check carefully. Use bright light and look closely behind the ears, at the back of the neck, and near the scalp. These are common places where lice and their eggs may appear.
Head lice do not jump or fly. They usually spread through close head-to-head contact or by sharing items like hats, brushes, scarves, or hair accessories.
It is also important to know the difference between nits and dandruff. Nits are oval and stick firmly to the hair shaft. Dandruff flakes are easier to brush away.
If lice are found, treatment may include medicated shampoo, prescription products, or careful wet-combing. Always follow the product instructions and repeat treatment if recommended.
Check everyone in the household so the problem does not keep coming back.
If the issue is fleas or ticks, the response is different. Fleas may require cleaning carpets, bedding, furniture, and treating pets. Ticks should be removed carefully with fine-tipped tweezers, then the bite area should be watched for rash, fever, or unusual symptoms.
Good cleaning habits can help prevent pests from returning. Wash bedding, vacuum regularly, reduce clutter, and keep humid areas dry.
Most importantly, reassure your child. These problems are common and can happen to anyone. With patience and the right steps, your home can return to normal quickly.
