Bridge Collapses After Powerful Earthquake
A powerful earthquake in Myanmar caused a large bridge over the Irrawaddy River to collapse.
The bridge, which was more than one kilometer long, connected Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, with Sagaing. Video shared by local media showed several sections of the structure falling during the quake.
Reports said at least five spans of the bridge collapsed, while another nearby bridge appeared to remain standing.
The earthquake struck about 33 kilometers southwest of Mandalay, a city with around 1.2 million residents. It was recorded at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers.
China’s earthquake agency measured the quake at magnitude 7.9, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated it at 7.7.
The collapse highlights the serious damage powerful earthquakes can cause to transport links and public infrastructure.
