At 70, I usually don’t bother with makeup or dressing up. But for my granddaughter’s wedding, I wanted to feel beautiful again.
I picked out a lovely dress, styled my hair, and spent hours on my makeup. I thought I looked radiant. However, when I arrived, I noticed people staring.
My granddaughter pulled me aside, clearly uncomfortable. “Grandma,” she said awkwardly, “You look ridiculous. You need to change.” I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. Unable to bear the humiliation, I left in tears.
Later, she called to apologize, admitting she’d overreacted and blaming her wedding stress for her behavior. But I’m struggling to forgive her. I feel so ashamed that the thought of attending any future family gatherings fills me with dread.
