Why Do Oven Doors Shatter and How to Prevent It?

Oven doors can shatter primarily due to the type of glass used and internal imperfections. Many ovens feature either tempered soda lime glass, which is less resistant to thermal fluctuations, or more durable borosilicate glass.

Small defects, such as nickel sulfide inclusions, may lead to spontaneous breakage, especially during high-heat activities like self-cleaning. To minimize this risk, handle oven doors carefully, avoid using abrasive tools or placing heavy items on the door, and ensure that dishes inside the oven don’t make contact with the glass.

Taking simple steps, like using gentle cleaning methods and preventing sudden temperature changes, can help reduce the chances of shattering, ensuring a safer kitchen and a well-functioning oven.
