The U.S. Department of Justice under Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to pause legal cases tied to President Joe Biden’s policies, including student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris filed motions to delay proceedings while the new administration reviews these policies. The Supreme Court was set to hear arguments soon, but Trump’s DOJ seeks to freeze deadlines, potentially putting the cases on hold indefinitely.
Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, which canceled debts for over 5 million students, faced legal challenges from Republican attorneys general, who argued Biden exceeded his authority. The 5th Circuit Court blocked Biden’s “borrower defense” rule, aimed at canceling loans for defrauded students. While the Supreme Court agreed to review these cases, the Trump administration’s request could render them moot. Trump has also opposed Biden’s climate agenda, advocating for increased domestic fossil fuel production instead.
