Donald Trump war:ns the US government…
As the deadline for government funding approaches, former President Donald Trump has warned that a potential government shutdown could occur within days if a temporary spending bill is not passed this week.
Trump’s statement came on Sunday (March 9), following the short-term spending bill introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson in December. The bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR), has kept the government funded until March 14. However, without another measure in place, a shutdown could result, forcing many federal employees to stop working without pay.
To prevent this, House Republicans introduced a new CR bill on March 8, which would provide funding through the end of the fiscal year on September 30. A vote is scheduled for March 11.
Trump expressed confidence that the bill would pass, urging Republicans to support it, stating, “The House and Senate have put together a very good funding bill. All Republicans should vote YES.”
Despite his endorsement, some Republicans, including Rep. Thomas Massie, have opposed the bill, arguing it continues excessive government spending.
The last government shutdown occurred under Trump’s administration, lasting 35 days from late 2018 into early 2019.
