US fires head of military base
Susannah Meyers, commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, has been removed from her position following her comments that distanced the base from the Trump administration’s stance on Greenland. The dismissal came after Vice President JD Vance visited the territory and reiterated Trump’s controversial interest in acquiring it. During the visit, Vance emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance in the face of Russian and Chinese influence and urged the territory to consider aligning with the U.S. rather than Denmark for security.
Meyers reportedly sent an email to staff at the base expressing that Vance’s comments did not reflect the views of Pituffik Space Base. Her removal was confirmed in a Space Operations Command statement, citing a “loss of confidence in her ability to lead” and stressing the importance of nonpartisan conduct. Colonel Shawn Lee has been appointed as her replacement. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell also commented that actions undermining President Trump’s agenda would not be tolerated within the Department of Defense.
