Elon Musk successfully wins vote
Elon Musk has won a vote to officially turn SpaceX’s Texas base, Boca Chica, into a city named Starbase, aligning with his broader ambition to colonize Mars. Out of 283 eligible voters, 173 supported the move, establishing Starbase as a city with a mayor, Bobby Peden, and two commissioners, all tied to SpaceX. Musk, who relocated from California due to disagreements over state policies, celebrated the vote, calling Starbase “now a real city.” The new city aims to build a supportive community for SpaceX staff and operations, with expanded infrastructure and services.
Despite the enthusiasm, critics are concerned about Musk’s increasing influence, particularly if Starbase gains control over local public resources like beaches and parks. SpaceX has requested approval to increase rocket launches from five to 25 annually, signaling rapid expansion. While Musk faces backlash over his political ties and Tesla’s declining performance, SpaceX remains popular for creating jobs and investing locally. The state legislature could potentially transfer more power to Starbase’s leadership, heightening concerns over private control of public land and governance.
