Donald Trump breaks silence

Donald Trump reacted on Truth Social after Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from Chicago was announced as the new pope, becoming the first American to hold the position. Known as Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old was chosen just one day after the conclave began. Trump expressed his excitement, calling it a “great honor” for the United States and looking forward to meeting the new pope. Pope Leo XIV, who follows in the footsteps of Pope Francis in advocating for migrants and the poor, delivered a prayer for peace from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, the College of Cardinals convened in Rome, staying at the Casa de Santa Marta with limited external contact, to ensure impartial voting. Meals were prepared by Vatican nuns, and the cardinals were prohibited from using phones or reading newspapers during the conclave. Pope Leo XIV, ordained in 1982, has spent much of his life outside the US, working as a missionary and learning multiple languages, including Italian and Spanish. Trump praised the election as a historic and meaningful moment for the country.
