Donald Trump expected to rename
Former US President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to change the way the United States refers to the Persian Gulf, opting to call it the “Arabian Gulf” instead. This comes after previous controversial decisions, such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and proposing to acquire Greenland. Trump is set to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict, Saudi investments in the US, and Iran’s nuclear program. Two officials claim that during this visit, he may announce the change in nomenclature, a move that has already sparked backlash, as the name “Persian Gulf” has been historically recognized since the 16th century.
Iranian officials have condemned the potential change, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasizing that the name represents a shared cultural heritage, not ownership. Changing it, he argues, would provoke strong opposition from Iranians worldwide. Trump previously referred to the gulf as the “Arabian Gulf” during his first term, prompting criticism from Iran’s then-President Hassan Rouhani, who suggested Trump should study geography. Though the plan is not yet confirmed, the controversy has reignited debates about respecting historical and cultural identities.
