Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday Glacier,” poses a significant threat if it collapses into the ocean. This massive glacier, roughly the size of the UK, is melting rapidly and currently accounts for about 10% of global sea level rise. If it completely disintegrates, sea levels could increase by 65 cm (2 feet). More concerning is the potential for Thwaites to destabilize nearby glaciers and lakes, which could add an additional 3 meters to sea levels. Such a rise would endanger low-lying nations and coastal cities worldwide.
Countries like the Netherlands, where one-third of the land is below sea level, would be severely impacted despite robust flood defenses. Bangladesh could see 15 to 30 million people displaced as one-third of its land submerges. Island nations, including the Maldives, Tuvalu, and Kiribati, face the risk of complete submersion. In the United States, cities like Miami, New York, and New Orleans are also vulnerable, with predictions that 60% of Miami-Dade County could be underwater.
