Trump sparks out.age

President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by renaming geographical locations, beginning with the Gulf of Mexico, now labeled as the “Gulf of America” on US-based map systems. Despite objections from Mexico, including a lawsuit, the change remains in place. Trump’s next move reportedly targets the Persian Gulf, planning to rename it the “Gulf of Arabia” during his visit to Saudi Arabia. Iranian leaders, already engaged in nuclear program negotiations with the US, have strongly condemned the potential name change. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeled the move as hostile and an affront to all Iranians, emphasizing that the historic name “Persian Gulf” reflects collective human heritage rather than national ownership.

Some Arab nations have long advocated for a name change, but Iran has maintained the historical designation dating back to the 16th century. While the terms “Gulf of Arabia” and “Arabian Gulf” are used in parts of the Middle East, Iran previously threatened to sue Google over map labeling issues. Amidst this dispute, US Vice President JD Vance, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, expressed willingness to support civil nuclear power in Iran but stressed opposition to nuclear weapon development. European diplomats have urged caution, warning Iran not to overreact to Trump’s proposed changes.
