Authorities reveal cause of ship
A Mexican navy training ship, Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, resulting in two fatalities and 19 injuries. The incident occurred after the ship lost power due to a mechanical issue while leaving a Manhattan pier, inadvertently heading toward the bridge. As the ship attempted to reverse, its tall masts clipped the structure, causing them to topple. New York Police Chief Wilson Aramboles confirmed that the ship was not supposed to be near the bridge. New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences and praised first responders for their swift actions, confirming that the bridge remained undamaged and open.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed sadness over the loss of two crew members and thanked Mayor Adams for his support. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident. Eyewitness Flavia Moreira described the scene as surreal, noting how the ship moved closer before striking the bridge and witnessing crew members struggling to hold on. According to law enforcement, the two deceased individuals fell from one of the ship’s masts during the crash.
