Reason Eminem has filed a lawsuit against
Eminem has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms—the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—seeking over \$109 million in damages. Filed on May 30 in Michigan through his company Eight Mile Style, the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, accuses Meta of copyright infringement involving 243 of his songs. The complaint states that Meta’s features like Original Audio and Reels allow and even encourage users to use his music without proper licensing or credit. It also claims Meta knowingly violated copyright laws and is therefore not protected under the DMCA’s safe harbor provision.
Eminem is requesting the maximum statutory damages of \$150,000 per song, totaling more than \$109 million. The lawsuit also seeks actual damages, lost profits, and a permanent ban on the unauthorized use of his music on Meta’s platforms. Eight Mile Style has requested a jury trial. This isn’t Eminem’s first legal battle; he previously faced a \$10 million lawsuit from his mother, Debbie Nelson, over a lyric in his 1999 song “My Name Is.” Although she was awarded \$25,000 in 2001, legal costs reduced her actual payout to just \$1,600.
