51 Confirmed De.ad, Dozens Missing in Catastrophic Texas Flooding

A peaceful summer along the Guadalupe River turned tragic as sudden flash flooding killed at least 51 people across Texas, with many still missing. The floods, triggered by severe storms, struck without warning, devastating families and campers alike.

Kerr County was the worst hit, with 43 confirmed dead, including 15 children. A major focus of the disaster is Camp Mystic, a girls’ Christian summer camp, where 27 children remain unaccounted for. Nearby counties, including Travis, Kendall, Tom Green, and Burnet, also reported fatalities.

Camp Mystic became the center of rescue efforts as floodwaters surged through the area. Emergency crews are continuing their search in treacherous conditions. Texas Game Wardens reached the camp on July 5 and began evacuating those trapped.

The flood followed a rare “flood wave” event, where a surge of water from heavy rain rapidly intensified the Guadalupe River’s flow. A viral video captured the wave as it tore through Center Point, Texas, sweeping away everything in its path.

Several children from Camp Mystic have been confirmed dead, including Renee Smajstrla, Sarah Marsh, Lila Bonner, and Janie Hunt. Their families shared emotional tributes as the community mourns.

A family of four remains missing after vacationing near the river. Coach Reece Zunker, his wife Paula, and their two children disappeared when floodwaters rose rapidly at their river house.

The Brake family also suffered loss. Joni and Robert Brake were swept away while staying at an RV park. Their tragic disappearance highlights how fast the floodwaters struck.
