Meghan Markle’s one-word nickname given by King Charles reveals truth behind their relationship
King Charles reportedly gave Meghan Markle a unique nickname early in her relationship with Prince Harry, one that carries a meaningful message.
Meghan and Harry were introduced on a blind date in London in July 2016 while Meghan was in town for Wimbledon. Their chemistry quickly blossomed, with Meghan later sharing on social media that their second date took place on July 4.
Soon after, Meghan joined Harry on a trip to Botswana, where they bonded under the stars. By October 2016, their romance was public, drawing intense media attention, much of it racially charged. In response, the royal family released a rare statement condemning the harassment Meghan faced.
Harry introduced Meghan to his father that same month. In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry described how they practiced the meeting in advance, including Meghan’s curtsey. He noted that Charles seemed impressed by Meghan’s confidence and intelligence.
Shortly after their introduction, Charles affectionately began calling Meghan “Tungsten.” The nickname, referring to the durable chemical element, is said to symbolize her strength and resilience.
Royal insider Charlotte Griffiths revealed in 2018 that the nickname was meant as a compliment. She explained that Charles admired Meghan for being a strong presence in Harry’s life, saying Harry benefits from having someone “tough” by his side.
Currently, it’s unclear how Meghan and Charles’s relationship stands. Harry has been open about the distance between him and his father, particularly after the Sussexes stepped back from royal duties and lost their official security.
