The former president has long warned that the U.S. is at risk of sliding into autocracy under Trump, where a single leader holds unchecked power.

In June, Obama compared the situation in the U.S. to regimes like Hungary under Viktor Orbán, where elections happen but true democratic principles—such as accountability, equal representation, and the rule of law—are being eroded. He warned the U.S. is “dangerously close” to such a shift.
