Donald Trump Issues 50-Day Ultimatum To Putin To End Ukraine War
Donald Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day deadline to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking from the Oval Office alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed frustration with Russia’s actions.
Trump said he is “very unhappy” with Putin and warned of “very severe tariffs” if no peace agreement is reached within 50 days. He noted he expected a deal months ago and is disappointed by the lack of progress.
The former president emphasized that if no agreement is made, secondary tariffs will be implemented, increasing to 100 percent. He stated plainly, “That’s the way it is,” but added he hopes it won’t come to that.
Currently, the U.S. has limited trade ties with Russia due to previous sanctions imposed by President Joe Biden following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Trump’s proposed tariffs would target countries that continue to buy oil from Russia, not Russia directly. These secondary sanctions could significantly raise the cost of imports from nations like China, India, and Germany.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick clarified that the penalties Trump is considering would be aimed at punishing countries using Russian petroleum, not taxing Russian exports directly.
Trump reiterated his frustration with inaction on the global stage, criticizing the ongoing violence in Ukraine. He said, “It’s all talk,” referencing diplomatic efforts, while pointing to continued deadly missile attacks in Kyiv.
