Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake Hits Alaska – Details & Videos
A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska’s southern coast on July 16, 2025, triggering a tsunami warning and widespread evacuations. The quake hit at 12:37 p.m. AKDT, about 55 miles south of Sand Point, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
The tremor was felt across the Alaska Peninsula. A tsunami warning was issued for areas from Unimak Pass to Kennedy Entrance, prompting evacuations in places like King Cove, Kodiak, Unalaska, and Homer. The warning was downgraded and later canceled after no significant sea-level changes were detected.
Although no structural damage was reported, social media showed intense shaking. At Anchorage’s Lake Hood Seaplane Base, pavement and aircraft trembled. One video from inside a home showed a man rescuing a child as items fell from the walls.
Sand Point’s city administrator called it the strongest earthquake she’s ever felt. The Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) recorded 18 aftershocks and said the quake is part of an ongoing seismic sequence. AEC Director Michael West noted the slim chance of a stronger quake following.
Southern California also experienced seismic activity. A series of earthquakes near Julian included a 5.2 magnitude quake, followed by two smaller ones. Residents described buildings shaking and rushing outdoors for safety.
Governor Newsom and San Diego Gas & Electric responded quickly, inspecting infrastructure and advising public caution. No injuries or major damage were reported.
Meanwhile, a deadly tornado outbreak in March devastated the South and Midwest, killing 18. Mississippi was hit hardest, and a minor earthquake there complicated ongoing recovery efforts. Damage assessments are still underway.
We got this incredible footage of today's earthquake from a resident in Sand Point, about 50 miles from the epicenter. We are grateful to those who shared their experiences — it allows others to understand what an earthquake is like, and be better prepared. We are also grateful… pic.twitter.com/5tkqcbgp9Y
