Donald Trump Suggests a New Name for…
Former President Donald Trump has suggested renaming Veterans Day to “Victory Day for World War I.” Posting on Truth Social, he urged Americans to “start celebrating our victories again,” arguing that the nation should place greater emphasis on its military achievements.
Trump stressed that the United States played a decisive role in both World Wars but claimed weak leadership has prevented the country from fully honoring those victories. He believes rebranding the holiday would highlight America’s contributions more clearly.
In addition to changing Veterans Day, Trump proposed renaming Victory in Europe Day, currently observed on May 8, to “Victory in World War II Day.” He asserted that the U.S. played the most important role in defeating the Axis powers and deserved broader recognition.
Supporters view the idea as an attempt to restore pride in American history, but critics warn that it could come across as dismissive of the sacrifices made by other nations.
International observers note that such a move might spark tensions, particularly with Russia, which suffered staggering losses during World War II and remains deeply tied to its narrative of victory.
Historically, Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, created to mark the end of World War I in 1918. It was later expanded in the 1950s to honor all American veterans, regardless of the war they served in.
Today, the holiday is seen as a solemn day of reflection and gratitude rather than a celebration of battlefield triumphs, a tradition Trump’s proposal would dramatically alter.
