Duchess of Kent dead at 92: Glamorous ‘Yorks

Buckingham Palace has announced the death of the Duchess of Kent at the age of 92. She was widely admired for her glamour, independence, and lifelong commitment to charitable causes.

The Duchess became the oldest living member of the Royal Family after Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2022. She was also a familiar and elegant presence at events such as Wimbledon.

She gained national affection in 1993 when she comforted Czech tennis player Jana Novotna after her defeat by Steffi Graf on Centre Court, showing her empathy and warmth.

The Duchess passed away peacefully at Kensington Palace on Thursday night, surrounded by family. She is survived by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and their three children.

Her passing was publicly announced on the Royal Family’s official Twitter account, and a formal death notice was placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace, with the Union Flag flown at half-mast.

Having converted to Catholicism in 1992, she is expected to receive a Catholic funeral in line with her wishes. Buckingham Palace praised her lifelong dedication to music, youth causes, and numerous charitable organizations.

The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, paid tribute to the Duchess, highlighting her compassion, tireless service, and the lasting impact she had on both the Royal Family and the public.
