White House Posts Donald Trump Statement After US Open Controversy

Donald Trump attended the US Open men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Alcaraz won the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The final, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, was delayed twice and did not begin until around 2:45 p.m.

US Open organizers said the delays were caused by security measures for Trump’s entry. Many fans waiting outside claimed they had not been informed that the President would be attending.

Social media clips showed sections of the crowd booing Trump as he appeared on the Jumbotron and performed a salute before the match began. Former British tennis star Laura Robson noted the boos during Sky Sports’ broadcast.

S.V. Date, a Huffington Post correspondent, reported a mix of cheers and boos for Trump during the national anthem, describing it as a “wave of boos” from parts of the crowd.

Ahead of the final, US Open broadcasters were reportedly asked by the USTA not to emphasize crowd reactions to the President.

In response, the White House Rapid Response account posted a statement on Twitter calling critics “Fake News Losers” and claiming that broadcasts had included cheers despite media reports. The post accused opponents of being influenced by “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and highlighted video showing the reaction as it aired on television.
