Ocasio-Cortez Disparages Charlie Kirk Ahead of Vote to Memorialize Him

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke on the House floor Friday ahead of a vote to honor slain conservative figure Charlie Kirk, criticizing his character and falsely labeling him as anti-Semitic. She also suggested supporting the resolution would equate to endorsing the “Jim Crow” era and historical bigotry.

“The resolution brings pain to millions who endured segregation, Jim Crow, and systemic discrimination,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She continued by claiming Kirk opposed the Civil Rights Act and supported violence against political opponents.

Ocasio-Cortez alleged Kirk encouraged leniency for Paul Pelosi’s assailant and accused Jews of controlling colleges, nonprofits, and Hollywood. She called his views “ignorant” and said they aimed to disenfranchise millions, contrary to the resolution’s portrayal of him as a unifying figure.

Kirk was killed last week at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with seven counts and faces the death penalty if convicted. Kirk’s memorial service is scheduled for Sunday in Glendale, Arizona.

The House and Senate passed a resolution designating a “National Day of Remembrance” for Kirk. Several Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, walked out or declined to vote, with a total of 96 Democrats not supporting the measure.

The Senate unanimously approved a resolution naming Oct. 14, 2025, Kirk’s birthday, as a day of remembrance. Sen. Rick Scott praised Kirk’s contributions to civic education and public service, highlighting his faith and belief in robust debate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will pass a resolution honoring Kirk’s life and condemning political violence. Robinson told his parents he acted because Kirk “spreads too much hate,” according to charging documents.
