DIY Natural Bug Repellent to Keep Insects Away
When warmer weather arrives, pests often come with it. Ants, mosquitoes, and other insects can quickly disturb your home and outdoor spaces. While store-bought sprays may seem convenient, they often contain harsh chemicals that can irritate skin, harm pets, and affect the environment.
A simple, natural option is to create your own bug repellent using everyday household ingredients. This DIY solution is safe, eco-friendly, and much more affordable than chemical sprays.
To make it, mix ½ cup of white vinegar, ½ cup of olive or vegetable oil, and ½ cup of mild shampoo in a bowl. These three items work together to repel and eliminate pests without toxic side effects.
For stronger protection, you can also add lemon juice or essential oils such as citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus, or lavender. These natural scents are known to deter insects while leaving a fresher smell in your home.
Once mixed, pour the blend into a spray bottle. Use it on windowsills, baseboards, trash cans, kitchen corners, and outdoor furniture. Always test on delicate fabrics or wood surfaces before applying fully. Shake the bottle before each use and reapply daily, especially at dawn and dusk when bugs are most active.
Each ingredient plays an important role: vinegar’s sharp odor drives insects away, oil coats and blocks pests, and shampoo helps blend everything while offering a light cleaning effect.
This natural bug repellent is effective, safe, and environmentally friendly. It helps keep insects at bay all season long while protecting your family, pets, and surroundings from harmful chemicals.
