Drugs including hormonal contraceptives, anti-inflammatory treatments, certain diet pills, and, in rare instances, some COVID-19 medications have been linked to serious health issues like blood clots, strokes, embolisms, and heart attacks.

Blood clots, or thrombi, form when blood solidifies inside arteries or veins. While clotting is normal during injury, abnormal clots can obstruct blood flow, leading to life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack if not addressed quickly.

People with underlying health issues—including high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, smoking habits, or genetic clotting disorders—are believed to be at greater risk when using these medications. Regulatory agencies like the FDA and EMA have begun suspending or restricting some of these drugs pending further safety evaluations.

Warning signs of dangerous clotting events include sudden chest pain, breathing trouble, limb swelling, severe headaches, vision problems, and irregular heartbeats. Recognizing these symptoms early is vital, as timely treatment can prevent fatal outcomes.

Officials stress that patients should not abruptly stop taking any prescribed medicine without first consulting a medical professional. Doing so could worsen existing conditions or cause other complications.
