She Went Missing 4 Decades Ago, And Now Police Have Finally Found Her
When a person disappears, families usually alert authorities and search tirelessly. But as months turn into years, cases can grow cold, leaving unanswered questions behind.
A disappearance from 42 years ago has now been partially resolved. Investigators located the missing woman, yet the reasons behind her vanishing—and how she lived during those decades—remain unclear.
In the 1970s, Flora worked alongside Robert at a resort hotel called The Concord. Using the same last name, Stevens, they appeared to be married. Robert told police he had driven Flora to a hospital appointment and returned to find her gone. She was never located, and Robert passed away in 1985 without answers.
More than four decades later, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received an inquiry from an investigator. Skeletal remains had been discovered, and officials wanted to compare DNA, asking whether Flora had living relatives.
While searching for relatives, deputies uncovered something unexpected: Flora was alive. She had been residing at CareOne, an assisted living facility.
Because she now suffers from dementia, details about her disappearance are limited. Caregiver Festus Mbuva suggested she may not have wanted to be found, noting she rarely discussed her past and often replied, “none of your business.”
Authorities believe she could have left from a nearby bus station after her hospital visit, possibly carrying recent wages. Though the full story may never be known, Sheriff Mike Schiff said the most important outcome is that Flora is safe.
