Macaulay Culkin ends decades
More than 30 years after Home Alone was released, Macaulay Culkin has finally shared his thoughts on one of the film’s biggest mysteries—what Kevin McCallister’s father did for a living.
The 1990 holiday classic follows eight-year-old Kevin, who is accidentally left behind when his large family travels to Paris for Christmas vacation. He then defends the family home from burglars Harry and Marv using clever traps.
While fans loved Kevin’s creativity, many also wondered how his parents could afford such a huge house in suburban Chicago and an expensive international family trip. Their wealthy lifestyle sparked years of debate online.
Some fans guessed Peter McCallister might have been a mob lawyer, a wealthy accountant, or even someone living off inherited family money. Others believed the family was simply upper-middle class with strong financial stability.
Director Chris Columbus once explained that writer John Hughes and he had discussed the parents’ jobs. He remembered Kate being a successful fashion designer, while Peter may have worked in advertising.
Author Todd Strasser, who wrote the film’s novelization, imagined Peter as a businessman and Kate as a fashion designer, saying they seemed wealthy but not extremely rich.
Culkin later shared his own view, saying he believes Peter was a corporate lawyer, which explained the family’s expensive lifestyle, while Kate was likely an interior decorator, helping explain why their home looked so stylish and elegant.
