Teenage girl bullied and harassed
Losing weight can be motivated by many things — health, appearance, or social pressure. For 16-year-old Australian teenager Josie Desgrand, the trigger was scrolling through Instagram and comparing herself to the slim models she saw daily. At 280 lbs, she felt deeply unhappy and had repeatedly failed to stick to diets, falling into cycles of self-pity and poor eating.
Her turning point came when she stood in front of a mirror in her underwear and made a firm promise to herself: things were going to change. She photographed herself from multiple angles and recorded her body measurements, committing to track every bit of progress along the way.
She started small, setting manageable goals and switching to a low-carb, sugar-free diet while drinking more water. Her father joined her on the journey, which gave her extra encouragement and accountability.
Through diet alone, Josie dropped from 280 lbs to 198 lbs. She then took the next step by joining a gym, which she credits with pushing her toward her ultimate goal weight.
Rather than fuelling insecurity, Instagram became a powerful source of motivation. She created the account @nolongerfatjosie to document her meals and milestones, quickly building a supportive global following.
She dedicated an hour each evening to responding to followers, offering encouragement to those who felt like giving up — drawing on her own experience to keep others going.
Today, Josie weighs around 138 lbs — roughly half her starting weight. What began as a diet evolved into a complete and lasting lifestyle change.
