What to Do If Your Child Has a Sudden Neck Lump

Finding a sudden lump on your child’s neck can be frightening, especially when it appears overnight and the doctor’s office is closed.

In many cases, a neck lump is a swollen lymph node. This can happen when the body is reacting to a common infection, such as a cold, sore throat, or minor skin irritation.

Start by staying calm. Reassure your child and gently check the lump. Notice whether it is soft, movable, tender, or on one side only. A small, soft, movable lump in a child who otherwise seems well may often be watched until the pediatrician is available.

Still, some signs need urgent care.

Go to the emergency room if your child has trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, drooling, a very high fever, severe pain, fast swelling, or a lump that feels hard and fixed in place.

Until your child is seen, focus on comfort. Offer fluids, rest, and a warm compress. You may also use age-appropriate pain relief according to the label or your doctor’s past guidance.

Do not squeeze, press hard, or try to pop the lump. Also avoid random home treatments.

If you feel unsure, call an urgent care clinic, nurse line, or telehealth service. Asking for help is not overreacting. It is a careful way to protect your child and get peace of mind.
