Australian Court Rules in Gender Identity App Case
An Australian court has ruled in favor of Roxanne Tickle, a transgender woman who was removed from the female-only Giggle app.
The Federal Court dismissed an appeal by app founder Sall Grover and found that Tickle had been unlawfully discriminated against because of her gender identity. The court also increased her damages from $10,000 to $20,000 and ordered legal costs to be paid up to $100,000.
The case began after Tickle was denied access to the app in 2021. The court said she was treated less favorably than a woman assigned female at birth.
Judges noted that the case involved issues that can divide public opinion. However, they said their role was to apply Australia’s Sex Discrimination Act, which protects people from discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and intersex status.
Grover has said she plans to take the case to Australia’s High Court.
The decision is expected to continue public debate about women-only spaces, digital platforms, and gender identity rights.
For now, the ruling stands as a major legal moment in Australia’s ongoing discussion about discrimination law and inclusion.
