A planned singles event for unvaccinated people at Recess Beer Garden was canceled after strong backlash from local residents and social media users.
The gathering was reportedly organized by Unjected, a dating platform aimed at unvaccinated individuals. Promotional posts advertised the Denver venue as the location for the May event.
Many locals criticized the idea online, with some warning about public health concerns and others accusing the event of promoting political division. Several commenters urged the beer garden to cancel the gathering immediately.
Recess Beer Garden later stated that it had not officially approved or organized the event. Management claimed they only learned about the promotion through social media and said proper event authorization procedures had not been followed.
The business also explained that growing online hostility and safety concerns influenced the decision to cancel. According to the venue, staff members received harassment and threatening messages as the controversy escalated.
Unjected founder Shelby Hosana disputed the claims, arguing that the venue had previously been aware of the meetup. She accused the beer garden of changing its position after public backlash and described the cancellation as discrimination against unvaccinated individuals.
Despite the controversy, Unjected said the event would still take place at another venue in Denver under the name “Freedom Mixer.” Organizers insisted the gathering was intended to support personal freedom and bodily autonomy rather than promote an anti-vaccine movement.
