I was shamed as Britain’s
At just 12 years old, Tressa Middleton became Britain’s youngest mother after giving birth in 2006. Two decades later, she says she is finally building a calmer and happier life with her four children.
Now in her early thirties, Middleton describes herself as emotionally exhausted but grateful. She spends her days caring for her young family while reflecting on the difficult childhood and public scrutiny that shaped her life.
Her pregnancy became national news when she was only 11 years old. At the time, newspapers portrayed her as a symbol of social decline, but years later the deeper truth emerged: she had suffered abuse by her older brother throughout childhood.
The trauma, unstable home life, and exposure to addiction left lasting scars. Middleton later struggled with heroin addiction alongside her partner, admitting they spent years trapped in crime and substance abuse.
She says discovering she was pregnant with her daughter Arihanna in 2016 became the turning point that pushed both of them to stop using hard drugs completely. Since then, she has focused on raising her children and creating a safer environment than the one she experienced growing up.
Middleton’s first child was eventually adopted after social services determined she could not cope at the time. Although the separation remains painful, she says she is comforted knowing her daughter grew up in a stable home.
Today, Middleton hopes her children will have opportunities she never had, including education, stability, and independence. She says her biggest goal is ensuring they experience a childhood filled with safety, support, and normal family life.
