Severe Constipation and Toxic Megacolon Warning Signs

Severe constipation is often caused by dehydration, low fiber intake, stress, certain medicines, or lack of movement. In many cases, it improves with simple lifestyle changes.

However, constipation should not always be ignored. When bowel movements stop for a long time, pressure and gas can build up in the intestines. In rare cases, this may be linked to serious complications.

One dangerous condition is toxic megacolon. This happens when the colon becomes severely inflamed, swollen, and unable to work properly. It is a medical emergency.

Toxic megacolon is usually connected to conditions such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, or serious infections like C. difficile. It is not the same as ordinary constipation.

Warning signs may include severe belly swelling, strong abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, fast heartbeat, dehydration, confusion, or being unable to pass stool or gas.

These symptoms need urgent medical attention. Waiting too long or relying only on home remedies may allow the condition to get worse.

Treatment often requires hospital care. Doctors may use fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicine, or other treatments depending on the cause. Severe cases may require surgery.

To support digestive health, drink enough water, eat fiber-rich foods, stay active, and speak with a doctor about ongoing bowel changes.

Most constipation is not dangerous, but severe or worsening symptoms should always be taken seriously.
