Heart Surgeon Warns About Refined Carbs and Heart Health

A heart surgeon is warning that refined carbohydrates may be a hidden risk for heart health when eaten too often.

Dr. Philip Ovadia says foods such as bagels, sugary cereals, crackers, chips, flavored yogurts, fruit juice, and some low-fat snacks can raise concerns because they are often high in refined carbs.

These foods may cause blood sugar spikes and may contribute to insulin resistance and inflammation over time. Dr. Ovadia says this can create conditions that may increase the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, according to CDC data.

Health experts generally recommend focusing on an overall heart-friendly eating pattern instead of blaming only one food. The American Heart Association advises eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy proteins, and minimally processed foods, while limiting refined grains, added sugars, and processed meats.

The goal is not fear, but better daily choices.

Instead of highly processed snacks, people can choose foods such as vegetables, nuts, eggs, fish, lean protein, beans, and whole grains.

Anyone with heart disease, diabetes, or cholesterol concerns should speak with a healthcare professional before making major diet changes.
