Ex-Biden Aide Admits
A senior aide to Joe Biden appeared for a closed-door interview lasting more than four hours as part of a House Oversight Committee inquiry into the use of an autopen and questions about the former president’s decision-making capacity.
Neera Tanden, who leads the White House Domestic Policy Council, stated in her opening remarks that she was authorized to use the autopen. She said she managed the flow of documents to and from the president and was permitted to oversee its use between October 2021 and May 2023.
During her testimony, Tanden denied any wrongdoing or concealment. She emphasized that she cooperated fully with investigators and answered all questions during the session.
After leaving the Capitol, she rejected claims of a cover-up regarding Biden’s health, stating plainly that such allegations were “absolutely not true.”
The investigation is the first in a series of interviews, with additional officials expected to appear, including advisers close to former First Lady Jill Biden. Lawmakers are seeking to determine who was responsible for authorizing presidential signatures on key documents.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said the probe is focused on identifying who effectively made decisions in the White House during Biden’s final years in office, particularly regarding the use of mechanical signatures on official actions.
Donald Trump has also called for further investigation, arguing that senior aides may have concealed Biden’s condition and improperly used the autopen. Biden has denied these claims, saying he personally made all major decisions and describing the allegations as politically motivated distractions.
