The biggest mistake drivers
Automotive experts are warning drivers about a common habit that could significantly reduce an engine’s lifespan and lead to costly repairs.
Many motorists start their vehicles and drive away immediately without allowing the engine a brief moment to settle. According to a mechanic known on TikTok as @tallerredista, this practice can be harmful over time.
He recommends letting the engine idle for around 30 to 40 seconds before moving. This short waiting period allows the engine oil to circulate properly and lubricate critical internal components.
The mechanic explained that failing to give the lubricant enough time to reach all moving parts can accelerate wear and tear inside the engine.
In a video example, he described a vehicle whose owner regularly drove off immediately after starting. Over time, this habit caused serious damage to the connecting rod and crankshaft bearings, resulting in an expensive repair.
Industry specialists agree that oil requires a short period to build sufficient pressure after the vehicle has been inactive for several hours. Without proper lubrication, engine parts may operate under increased stress.
Experts also caution against hard acceleration right after startup, as it can contribute to overheating, internal scoring, and severe engine damage. While modern life often encourages rushing, mechanics emphasize that waiting just half a minute before driving is a simple step that can help preserve engine health and reduce repair costs.
