Firefighter’s funeral postponed

A Chicago family experienced both profound grief and unexpected joy after firefighter Michael Altman died while serving his community, just as his wife was preparing to welcome their second child.

Altman, 32, suffered severe injuries while battling a fire when a floor collapsed beneath him. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries, according to fire department officials.

Known for his courage and dedication, Michael came from a family with a long history of firefighting service. He was the fourth generation to follow that path and was widely respected by colleagues and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Altman, their young son, and their unborn child. As loved ones prepared to honor his life, an unexpected event changed the family’s plans.

Michael’s funeral was scheduled for March 27, but it was postponed when Nora went into labor shortly before the ceremony. The Chicago Fire Department announced the delay and asked for understanding during the emotional time.

Amid the sorrow, the family welcomed a baby girl named Evelyn Rose. Her birth brought a moment of happiness and hope during an otherwise heartbreaking period for the family.

Residents, fellow firefighters, and supporters have continued to honor Michael’s sacrifice and service. Meanwhile, authorities say a suspect has been arrested in connection with the fire. The family now faces the challenge of mourning a beloved husband and father while embracing the arrival of a new daughter.
