The Midnight Slip
A late night at work had left me exhausted. The office was nearly silent, with only the faint sound of the air conditioning filling the empty space.
Around midnight, I finally finished my tasks, gathered my belongings, and headed toward the building’s exit, eager to get home and rest.
As I entered the lobby, the security guard approached me. His serious expression immediately made me uneasy.
He quietly informed me that my ex-partner had visited earlier that evening. Since he was not authorized to enter, the guard had refused him access and sent him away.
The news shocked me. We had not spoken for months, and I never expected him to appear at my workplace.
The guard then handed me a small piece of paper. He explained that my ex had left it behind and that something about the message seemed strange, so he felt I should see it.
My pulse quickened as I unfolded the note. The handwriting was unmistakably his. Written on the paper were only six chilling words: “Don’t go home.”
