From Near Death

Turia’s journey is a remarkable story of survival, resilience, and love. Although she faced unimaginable challenges after a tragic accident, she rebuilt her life and found happiness beyond what many thought possible.

In September, Turia participated in a 100-kilometer endurance race organized by RacingThePlanet. About one-quarter of the way through the course, a sudden wildfire erupted, trapping several competitors in dangerous conditions.

Caught in the flames, Turia fought to escape as temperatures became extreme. She suffered severe third-degree burns across 65 percent of her body and endured life-threatening injuries.

Before the disaster, Turia had enjoyed a successful career as a model and had been a finalist in the Miss Australia competition. The accident dramatically changed the course of her life and future.

Her recovery was long and difficult. Turia spent 864 days receiving medical care and underwent more than 200 operations, including reconstructive procedures. She also lost five fingers due to her injuries.

Throughout her recovery, her boyfriend Michael remained devoted. Determined to marry her if she survived, he supported her every day, helping with basic tasks, rehabilitation, and emotional recovery. He even left his job to become her full-time caregiver.

Their dedication to each other eventually led to a proposal in the Maldives in 2015. Later, they welcomed their son, Hakawai, in 2017, marking the beginning of a new and joyful chapter in their lives.
